Chromatics - “In The City” (YouTube)

Demo tracks have been floating around for a while now — but Chromatics’ Shining Violence might be the favorite of 2007. Okay, we’re not even into 2007, and I’m calling best albums which really isn’t fair… but I can’t imagine any album being better. I know I sound like typical blog blah, but it’s truth. I swear.

Shining Violence basically continues on the same path started on the “Nite” 12″ we all loved like six months or so ago. Here is further proof that working with Glass Candy is by far the best decision Chromatics could have made… the band lend every missing piece to the other. “In The City” conjures up so many different aural references to the past that you feel like you already know and love this track. It’s one of those rare songs that is a classic before it is even ever played a first time.

Prediction for 2008: A thousand Shining Violence rip off bands.

The Gossip - “Jealous Girls” (YouTube)

I think I have now officially seen the 80’s rehashed one too many times. Oh, this video could be so much better, but at least we can close our eyes.

This was my first pick from Standing In The Way Of Control. Anyone know if “Jealous Girls” is getting remixes?

The Black Lips

I’m pretty much posting the Black Lips only because their press photo has a donkey painted like a zebra. Well not exactly true. They’re the Black Lips and have been owning for a while now. Since “Not A Problem” is off of The Black Lips’ 2005 Let It Bloom, you probably are already familiar with this track. Dark garage chaos… The Black Lips bring a much needed sound that is missing from most popular rock bands these days. Blah, blah, blah.

The Black Lips will be making splashes in ‘07 with their next album coming out on Vice. Sketchy info from Vice:

The result, Los Valentes Del Mundo Nuevo manages to capture the chaos of their live show (they kidnapped a Mariachi band to play with them for fuckssake) and pounds out some of the greatest hits of their past records.

Does that mean the Black Lips “just” re-recorded a bunch of their “old” tracks for a “new” release on Vice? I don’t get it. Whatever, Tijuana is the new Williamsburg.

Love it again for a second time. It sounds better this way.

DJ Paul V of the Smash Mix has a special Christmas mix up. The Rainbow Brite Christmas song is the creepiest track ever… but the mix does highlight some the commercial high and low points of Christmas.

DJ Paul V - “Merry Christ-Smash Mix 2006!” (mp3)

I posted “I Wish You A Merry Christmas” last year, but my feelings haven’t changed. It is STILL my all time favorite Christmas song ever. Ever. Off of John Waters Christmas album, Big Dee Irwin and Little Eva want you to have a very merry Christmas…. you will and you have no choice.

A John Waters Christmas can be purchased from Insound or iTunesLittle Cindy - A John Waters Christmas. On a related note, John Waters Valentines Day album is coming out in time for Valentines Day 2007. Who cannot wait?

Big Dee Irwin & Little Eva - “I Wish You A Merry Christmas” (mp3)

I love Christmas because it is all about sharing. I know, I know… it is so cheesy, but true. Kill Rock Stars gave away a Holiday album with each order from their shop this year. If you missed out on that it can still be download from eMusic or Kill Rock Stars Winter Holiday AlbumiTunes. There are a few gems on it… depending on who you love from KRS.

I pretty much hated Beth Ditto’s cover of “Every Day Is Christmas With You” the first few times I heard it. Beth Ditto’s personality is non-existent and her voice sounds totally uninspired. It is not the Beth Ditto we all know and love. On top of that, the song itself is kinda blah.

A more obvious (and better) choice would’ve been something from the Phil Spector songbook… like “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” That could have been and would have been amazing. “Every Day Is Christmas With You” isn’t special…. until you listen to it a hundred times. For some reason this track has slowly become a favorite Christmas song. “Every Day Is Christmas With You” is good for what it is not… total understated beauty that is often missing this time of year.

Rodion + Hugo Sanchez el Tremendizmo - Rodion In Babouche (DJ mix)

Since it feels like a Friday (and almost is), I figured it was time for another new mix - I love me a good DJ mix, especially when it is full of rad Italo disco, robo-techno and other wild shit.

This mix is by a couple of dope Italian producers Rodion and Hugo Sanchez, who run the awesome Radio DD website - they post radio mixes, and they have friends join them all the time. I've been checking out their stuff since I added them as a friend on Myspace - I did so because I saw they were releasing a 12" EP on one of my favorite labels, Germany's Gomma.

As it turns out, the EP - called Atala Ride - is awesome. It is essentially real-deal Italo disco, with the added (nerd) bonus of 8-bit video game synths thrown in the mix. It is available now from your favorite indie dance retailers, as well as from the Radio DD store.

OK, so this mix is hot hot hot. They sent us a message about it today, so I figured I'd share the love! It features D'Arcangelo, Ueberschall, Lifelike & Kris Menace (I love this song and so should you guys!), Kerrier District, Box Codax, Rodion (listen for the 8-bit gameboy-style synths), Tomboy, Capri, Bangkok Impact, Khan & Brigitte Fontaine, Bodestandig, el Tremendizmo, Dj Athome, Hostage, and Justice.

Blam! Enjoy!

proto
Paris is doing it again! This time with Minty Fresh band Prototypes. Great Rock N Roll feel with fuzzy guitars, dry humpin beats, and sexy Parisian style. You can go download their EP for free from Minty Fresh: here. Just go to Stimuli.

The blogs are going crazy for them and you can tell why. Nothing wrong with a little french love. They have some great songs up on their myspace as well.
