target market

Between you and me, I kind of hope this whole indie-dance-punk thing is over. Not that some bands don't do it well - I love Franz Ferdinand and a few Bloc Party songs, among some other things - but there's something generally missing from the genre, personally speaking. Maybe I'm just too much of a pop nerd to really appreciate it; I need melody to keep my attention.

That's probably why I love the catchy Franz Ferdinand songs so much, and why bands like Target Market are so much fun to hear. This band has the aesthetic and the melodies, all wrapped up in a package of straight-up fun. Well, maybe "fun" isn't the right word; this band has some darkness to their music, too.

Target Market - The Beat.

This one isn't long, but it's durable. I love that main phrase that opens the song, the flurry of hi-hats, and the fact that the first words Nathan Bernaix sings are, "Use my hands to cover your face." And you'll love how, three hours later from now, this song will be stuck in your head.

These guys are on the Afternoon Records roster, a lineup of bands that gets more impressive by the day. "The Beat" comes from their record No Thrills, which you should buy here (click on "store" and then "records").

Happy New Year!

And hey! You can see Target Market tomorrow night at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, along with Hockey Night, One For The Team, Mouthful of Bees, and We All Have Hooks For Hands. If that's not an amazing lineup, I don't know what is.

Be there!

Sinner DC - They Never Stay

Just another quick post from me today... things have been non-stop since I got back from my wild-West adventures (skiing, snow-shoeing, uh... high-impact couch laze-ing), and they won't be letting up anytime soon, but hey, you know how the holiday season is!

Sinner DC is a three-piece from Geneva, Switzerland, who make some pretty fantastic electronic music - think part disco party, part dub-step, and part Krautrock. They have contacted MFR a couple of different ways, and I have been meaning to get to posting something of theirs. Their latest outreach was via Myspace, to tell us about their new end-of-year DJ mix that features Burial, Extrawelt, the Field, James Figurine, Mathew Jonson, Klaxons, and Vitalic, among others.

You can listen to the mix, and a bunch of songs from their most recent album, Mount Age (which this track comes from) on their website - here, or download it from their MP3 page.

Mount Age, which came out late last year on the highly respected British label, A.i., has been getting tons of high quality critical reviews, so it is worth your picking up - get it from our friends at Forced Exposure, or download it via BLEEP. Highly recommended.

PS: Don't forget about my new jam tomorrow night with my buddy David Bruno, and our special guests Druzzi from the Rapture, James F!@#$%^ Friedman, and Jonny Love from Guns 'n' Bombs. I say it will be dope! Dope!!!

New Clinic Video - “If You Could Read Your Mind”

Thursday, January 4th, 2007
We love the clench-jawed, masked men of Clinic. And though the the parlor tricks and line dance routine (btw, wtf?) don't make the stinging, "medieval acid punk" of this Visitations track any less creepy -- they do make it make...
