Sparklehorse Does Live Session, Talks About Bears

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007
To know Mark Linkous through the years is to know you aren't gonna get him to gab much, but even in his dry, concise interview responses, the guy's charm is evident and subtly revealing. So fans of Sparklehorse should check...

Panda Bear - Comfy In Nautica

Jesus, this one was such a surprise when I first heard it. Totally out there, super psychedelic, but beautiful, just beautiful.

Panda Bear, aka Noah Lennox, hails from Baltimore's Animal Collective (ask robot JP about his high school connection to them) - he has made this new album, titled Person Pitch, and it is just mind meltingly good. Seriously.

Plenty of people will be talking about this record - I'm waiting for the P-fork review - but I have no problem coming out and saying it will be among the best records of 2007. Think Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney with an MPC, playing with Arcade Fire or your other favorite 'baroque pop' band. Seriously, it is modern, crazy, sunshine-filled music.

Person Pitch comes out March 20th on the Animal Collective's home-base label, Paw Tracks - visit their online store to get your copy. It is well worth it. Highly recommended.

New Wave Tuesday: Mathematiques Modernes - Disco Rough

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

We’re back with another edition of New Wave Tuesday & we’re also back on the ‘French Wave’ tip. This time we offer up this delectable piece of no-wave/new wave goodness titled Disco Rough by Mathematiques Modernes. Disco Rough was released as a single in 1980. You can still find the 12 inch on gemm in very good condition for $8.00. Or, as Dr. Droy reminded us last week, this track was also released on the compilation ‘So Young But So Cold (Underground French Music 1977 - 1983)‘ on Tigersushi. The comp is an unfiltered look into the cultish no-wave/new wave movement which was taking place at that time.

Bigmouths Strike Again: Stars Are Blind (And Deaf, Too) Edition

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
Just when you thought Warner Bros. recording artist Paris Hilton may have been embarrassed into submission, a musician with some cred went and made an unlikely confession. The person in question told Star:I bought her single "Stars Are Blind." I...

New Page France - “The Ruby Ring Man”

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
The effervescent lead track from Baltimore indie pop outfit Page France's forthcoming record has the jangly, glockenspiel-tinged elements of Page past, though the band's main songwriter Michael Nau will tell you it's a different band this time out, more collaborative...

New Nicole Atkins - “The Way It Is”

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
We've been tracking the nostalgic pop stylings of Nicole Atkins since her set opening the infamous Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/The National show at Bowery in September '05. Now, months after a label bidding war and countless hours in a...

New Bat For Lashes Video - “Prescilla”

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
In addition to unexpectedly championing Spank Rock and predictably pimping Liars, Thom Yorke placed a Bat For Lashes track ("Horses And I") atop his iTunes playlist, saying "Natsha Khan of Bat For Lashes ain't scared ... this song seems to...

For Lou Barlow, Email Is A Truly Great Thing

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
A couple of the best advances in the recent trend toward band reformation come thanks to Lou Barlow, setting aside well-documented differences with both Eric Gaffney and J. Mascis to breathe some vitality into the beloved bands Sebadoh and Dinosaur...

Shout Out Out Out Out + Bang Gang

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

“Find What You Get” was sent out in one those huge promo list emails, so I’ve seen it on a few blogs now. There’s a good chance you have too. But still, it’s worth mentioning.

Shout Out Out Out Out have remixed Iceland’s Bang Gang (not the preferred, much more banging Australian Bang Gang). This is the type of remix we would’ve been super psyched for in 2005 — oh that synth! — but we’re still not afraid to get down with it in 2007. Love how Shout Out Out Out Out handled the vocals and strings on this one. Overall an awesome remix that is very, very Shout Out Out Out Out.

I think we posted the original track a couple years ago… but for your listening reference:

New Chromeo - “Fancy Footwork”

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
Here's the first track from electrofunkers Chromeo's follow-up to 2004's She's In Control. Still not shy about their synths, "Fancy Footwork" kicks off with "Beat It"-intro swooshes before turning out a two-stepping over-the-top dance track. Chromeo - "Fancy Footwork" (MP3)...
