Young Americans

LA is quickly becoming the dance capital of the States — move over New York, Miami, Detroit, Chicago. There are more acts coming out of California these days than those other cities combined. Young Americans is one of those acts to keep an eye on. “Turning Inside Out” has a Justicesque electro banger feel to it but with like a bit of that well produced California sound. The definite party jam. I love this track.

And be sure to check out their MySpace for some pretty killer remixes. Their TVOTR “Staring At The Sun” mix is refreshing… and extra bonus points for remixing the Scanners.

Goose has been on pretty much every important music blog, but not here. I kind of figured they were everyone’s favorite new band, but I was mistaken. I am posting these guys on here even if there album release is old news, because you all need to know who these guys are. You need to buy this record and you need to tell all your friends about my new boyfriends.
Their name is Goose and they are from Belgium. One of their members was the Soulwax guitarist for two years. Don’t compare too much to Soulwax as Goose is a lot heavier and more rock and synth driven than their predecessors. Their album ‘Bring It On” is definetly one of the best albums of last year. They are sure to blow any dance crowd away with their heavy get-up and get your head banging to their beats. Can they really be using their synth as a rock guitar? Yes they can. This shit is fucking heavy!!! Enjoy and support.
Let’s get these guys out to the U.S. of A.

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007We moved the site to a new server this weekend to make things a little faster and make it easier for us to add some planned features in the future. While we were at it, we also upgraded to a new version of Movable Type and switched out a bunch of the underlying technologies. Cause otherwise, the move would have just been, you know, too easy.
Anyway, with so many things being changed all at once, some stuff is bound to break before we get everything sorted out properly. Everything seems to be under control at the moment and the only downtime anyone should've experienced was the comments being unavailable for a couple hours and a hiccup with our mail server this morning.
If you notice anything else wonky with the site, post a comment here or email me at anders at columbia.edu. Click around, try to break things, let us know what we missed. Find 10 bugs and maybe we'll send you a copy of Volume 2!
Regular posting of kick-ass music shall resume shortly.

The first time I heard frYars it was pretty much instant hate… like I wanted to turn it off and never hear it again. To spark such an instant gut reaction is actually a good thing though, and I find myself returning to his music. At times, his music seems a little hokey, but the rough spots are easily overshadowed by the good parts. Be careful because you might actually find yourself addicted to this guy. The fact that he’s only 17 is very promising — frYars may actually mature into an excellent musician. Lots of potential here…
NME says he sounds like “Anthony And The Johnsons playing ‘Kid A’-era Radiohead.” I don’t know if I quite agree. I’d peg him as a cross between Rufus Wrainwright and The Postal Service with a little bit of a Lovely Feathers twist in there… or maybe even some Junior Boys influence. But whatever. You can decide for yourself.
