Genesis: 1976 - 1982

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007
We're gonna go ahead and follow-up our disproportionate excitement about Phil, Mike, and Tony's reGenesis with some news about a slew of re-releases and a tidy boxed set 'cause one of us (Lapatine) is a huge Genesis dork. So you'll...

Yelle

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

It’s been over a year since we first fell in love with and posted Yelle’s “Je Veux Te Voir”, but it’s never too late to revisit — ’specially since she’s finally starting to pick up some heat Stateside. The video looks like MIA’s “Galang” but with lots more hearts and rainbows and shit. It is totally your favorite trapper keeper from fifth grade.

David Bowie: Cover To Cover, Highline Festival

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007
The Thin White Duke turned 60 this year, marking a logical point for reflection on a career that's as influential as ever, from an artist who still dictates taste with his words, concert attendance, and lustrous body of work. But...

It’s Not Over ‘Til Mary Weiland Sets Fire To Your Velvet Wardrobe

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007
It's been an incendiary half-week behind closed doors for rocker Scott Weiland and his wife, Mary. The couple, who are no strangers to domestic disputes (Scott plead guilty to domestic violence charges against Mary in December '01), ramped up the...

Outputmessage (with My Robot Friend) - Marcheurs de Sommeil (Sleepwalkers)

Outputmessage, a.k.a. Bernard Emmanuel Farley has everything to do with robots. He's been featured on MFR in the not so distant past, and Bernard's Song from Ghostly's 2003 compilation Idol Tryouts Vol. 1 was one of my very favorite MP3 blog tracks back when my iPod Mini (yeah, old school like that I'm afraid) was brand new.

This time Bernard teams up with fellow NYC-ster, robot, and Electroclash survivor My Robot Friend. While MRF's music is typically much more of a pounding electronic affair, matched by live performances where his cock rockets off into the crowd (literally), they strike an amazing balance in this collaboration, finding a productive median that yielded this amazing beautiful track. This song is one of the several now available on the Sommeil Remixes EP, which is currently available on Melodic Records, and can be bought straight from the label.

So in case you haven't figured it out yet, we're quite pro-robot around here. It helps when they are self-professedly your friend, and also helps when they add a masterful touch to an already wonderful piece of music. So cheers to that, beepity beep, etc etc!

Hail Social

Hail Social

I recently wrote this note to a friend in regards to Hail Social’s new album, Modern Love And Death:

very… like 70’s non-dance disco but like post-punk at the same time. very um, unlikely. but just so good. almost important even.

Ok, that was at like 3am, but my opinion hasn’t changed much. It seems like Hail Social are on the brink of something very important… maybe not quite there yet. But…

Whatever. Modern Love And Death is definitely a late night treat. Like the perfect post-club/show chill out album.

Hail Social - “Heaven (mp3)

New Spoon - “Don’t You Evah” (Live At SXSW)

Monday, March 26th, 2007
Although the overarching collection of songs still lacks a title, that hasn't stopped Spoon from divulging the titles of the individual tracks comprised by the band's forthcoming, sixth album, due out 7/10 on Merge. The misspellings (e.g. "Yr," "Evah," "Rhthm"...
