NWT: Honeymoon Killers

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

The Honeymoon killers were a Belgian synth pop band started in 1977 by three friends. They recorded one album in 1979 but in 1980 they completed their line up with two new members & Véronique Vincent on lead vocals.

They were an irreverent bunch and had been known to throw raw meat onto their audience at live shows. Playing as many gigs as they could, the band pretty much took over the Belgian club and bar scene in ‘81. On their second album they covered Charles Trenet’s ‘Route Nationale 7′ which quickly became a radio & TV hit single in France and Belgium and the band even made the cover of NME.

The band split in the beginning of ‘85 right after their first Japanese tour & Yvon died in 1989. Their original album ‘Les Tueurs De La Lune De Miel’ released on Crammed discs goes for 215.94 on gemm! But I know foosl aint rich, so ebay has your back with a copy for 9 bones.

Why Isn’t This Starbucks Playing Paul McCartney?

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

On your way into work this morning, you may well have noticed the sweet sounds of Paul McCartney's Memory Almost Full as you waited in line for your Macca latte. Hell you may have paid using the snazzy prepaid McCartney Card (an "undated handout from Starbucks," says the AP)...

And we wanted to join the fun! So after putting up Poly, we swung down to the Starbucks at 2nd Ave and 9th St, passing Parker Posey and her puppy (making us feel even less cool as she sauntered into Mud Coffee on 9th), stripping off our headphones to walk into a Starbucks playing ... nothing? No Macca!

New Polyphonic Spree Video - “Running Away”

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Much like the vid assembled for their full-album promo mashup, the clip for Polyphonic's first single from The Fragile Army features nothing but still photos, sequenced together by Hal Samples to give DeLaughter's black-clad battalion a sorely needed sense of melodrama and grandeur ('cause the fatigues and the double digit body count weren't doing it). The result is stunning and a perfect compliment to Track 2's sunny-day-in-Texas bombast. And if you're missing the hippie choral-robed vibe: turn on, tune in, and hop out to the 2:40 mark for a glimpse at vintage Spree. (via GvsB)

If you missed it, MP3 awaits you here.

Don Cash

don cash
Don Cash is back again; poised and ready to pounce with Don Cash II on Relish recordings (headed by Headman). He’s putting together a tour, so keep an eye out. We got you the first single off the album which makes me think what T-Rex would sound like if he was thrown head-on into 2007. It’s remixed by Headman, the head honcho himself…sorry, too many ‘head’ puns. But can you ever get too much head?

“Arcade Fire Stole My Basketball”

Monday, June 4th, 2007

It's a crazy post-Stop Peter Bjorn & John world we're living in. Got a problem with an indie rocker? Start a blog about it! Dave writes in to tell us about a slow-brewing blog beef between some dude who claims to have had his basketball stolen by Win Butler (find him at arcadefirestolemybasketball.blogspot.com), and Butler-brother Will, who claims that, in fact, Arcade Fire didn't steal this dude's basketball (and you can find him at arcadefiredidntstealdudesbasketball.blogspot.com).

Given this is all entirely unsubstantiated internet hearsay, we'd like to add this fact to the controversy: In the recent Rolling Stone (P. 67, para 2, Issue 1027 -- Depp/Richards cover), Win told Gavin Edwards that "he tries to play basketball at least once a week, even on tour"! (Emphasis added for additional sensationalistic effect.)

Sounds like Win is totally guilty.

Danielson/Animal Collective @ South Street Seaport, NYC 6/1/07

Monday, June 4th, 2007

For most who made the trip way downtown for the River To River / Seaport Music Festival kick-off show, it was the official start to NYC's summer concert season. And you couldn't do better, opening with the uniformed Danielson and his familyre sounds 'til dusk, and the extraordinary avant-everything strawberry jamming of Animal Collective. For free. Love NYC.

Friday night AC were a trio; Panda Bear, Avey Tare, and the Geologist graced the Seaport stage, while Deakin did not. Well not technically; after moving around to a rear-view of the performance platform, friends pointed out Deakin sitting behind the PA system, on stage but out of sight to the crowd, just watching. We're told that he's not on this tour, but this has us pretty confused. Which is to say, we were at an Animal Collective show.

The set was dedicated to Sung Tongs and the forthcoming Domino-released LP; after a fantastic jaunt through "Who Could Win A Rabbit," Avey announced they'd be playing "some new songs." With a crowd pleaser and the slowly setting sun out of the way, the Seaport got its first taste of Strawberry Jam, sitting somewhere between Tongs' madcap bluster and Feels' inviting structure. Unlike their Webster show last year, which saw an already divisive band split its own fans into the frustrated and the fawning (the Geologist was "feeling it" that night, morphing every tune into a looping, abstrat sound collage), Friday's set rang true to most of the massive crowd gathered by the water.

To complete the set's Sungian symmetry, the Collective capped off the night with a perfectly spastic "We Tigers" (Geologist's whiplashing staredowns in full effect) and the classic, psychedelic vocal exercises of "Leaf House" -- but the trance-y calypso of new jam "Chores" ended up the night's post-show conversation piece. One of the year's best shows, easily, but being a free show, with one of the world's most creative bands, showing off excellent new material ... how could it not be? Lots of pics from both sets after the jump, plus a game of "Where's Deakin?" for your enjoyment.

Yelle

Yelle

One thing we all agree on at BIGSTEREO: our love for Yelle.

“A Cause Des Garçons” might be my favorite Yelle song yet. Totally awesome in so many different ways. You can stream the original on Yelle’s MySpace.

If you didn’t already have a soft spot for Riot In Belgium then check out their remix of “ACDG.” This remix sounds like it could be massive — can’t wait to hear it at a decent bitrate. There have been a few remix of this track but this one takes the cake.

The Tepr remix was making the rounds a little while ago. It’s has a little bit too much of that boom boom boom club sound for my taste. But can you do wrong to Yelle?

Broadway Vs. E. 4th St.: Mo Rocca Meets Indie Rockers

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Much missed Mr. Rocca's got himself a Broadway musical these days, so it makes perfect sense for him to talk show tunes with the hip kids at Other Music. Thankfully, the hipsters live up to their end of the premise, give or take an unexpected instance or two of Nazi love.

Grizzly Bear’s “Knife” Continues To Be Students’ Cover Of Choice

Monday, June 4th, 2007

The rate at which school kids are covering Yellow House jam "Knife" is alarming; a couple of months ago it was just some kids down in Atlanta, and now the amount of student cover love has gone and doubled courtesy of this a cappella version of the song, by The Carleton Singing Knights of Carleton College in Northfield, MN. (Adjust your woofer settings for the bass in the "Can't you feel the knife" section.)

So nice they did it twice (this time as some street clothed final exam procrastination). We've always enjoyed us some good indie rock a cappella, and "Knife"'s doo-wop swing makes it an obvious candidate for the unaccompanied vocal treatment. Now that school's almost out, hear any good indierockapella this semester?

VolksWilco

Monday, June 4th, 2007

"When you get into a Volkswagen, it gets into you." Welcome to Wilco's first commercial licensing deal, in which nearly half of Sky Blue Sky's tracklist will soundtrack a series of commercials aimed to convince you that driving a VW is a penetratingly good time. P4K reports there will be six spots in total, with the first set to Tweedy's non-Sky cut "The Thanks I Get." Plot fallacy, though: The tow truck dude loves this Volkswagon so much that he doesn't take it? He'd have a lot more time to jam to Sky Blue Sky and smile in the driver's seat down at the impound lot, no? Such is the tow-zone forgiving effect of the benevolent Volksvibes, we guess.

Still, better than the "You Are My Face" spot...
