$300,000.50

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Someone never saw Behind The Music: MC Hammer. Via Daily News:

The free ride is over at 50 Cent's G-Unit Records. The rap mogul has confessed he was overgenerous with artists on his label. In fact, Fitty spent $8.5 million of his own money to take a lot of the rappers on his most recent tour so that they could bring their entourages - and so that everyone could travel, as he says, "comfortably." Not only that, he'd hand out hundreds of thousands of dollars to them at a time just for the asking, Sacha Jenkins writes in the new issue of XXL magazine. "Whether I got to give them $500,000 or $300,000 ... Just 'cause they want $300,000 more to make what they [are] doing at the time comfortable. Like, 'yo, I want to get this new place over here.'"
But that's all over now; Fitty declared he "wouldn't be assisting them financially anymore." This came after seeing his artists were "being paid," yet "[he] was the only person with G-Unit sneakers on" ... and also after realizing he needed to invest those Formula 50 cents in lip-syncing lessons.

HelloKopter

HelloKopter is 18 year old Jessa Graves. Total raw talent, she sounds kinda like PJ Harvey with perhaps a little bit of a Sleater-Kinney influence. Most of the tracks on her MySpace aren’t typical BIGSTEREO fodder, but that voice! It is impossible to ignore.

“Budget” sounds demo-ish, but there’s a ton of potential here. HelloKopter is one to watch…

Video Hangover: Mansun - “Being A Girl”

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Every week, we dig in the archives for videos that we find noteworthy, memorable, or just unbelievably stupid. And then, Jon McMillan breaks 'em down for you. Why Video Hangover? Because when you watch as many videos as we do, you're going to feel it afterwards.

New Animal Collective Video - “Fireworks”

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

After leaving the excellent, free Midlake/New Pornos show at Battery Park yesterday (post tk), we discovered something rather awesome: East Village apartments have outstanding views of the East River fireworks! And after watching Animal Collective's first vid from Strawberry Jam, we discovered something else: the East River's thirty-minute fireworks featured considerably less face-melting and sparkly, silhouetted Pandas, Aveys, Deakins and Geologists than does Animal Collective's seven-minute "Fireworks." It's always a little more fun in the movies.

Check Yo Ponytail!!!

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

The Fireworks aren’t over. Come out this Saturday for Check Yo Ponytail’s Independence Day blow out… it’s gonna be hot with fireworks and barbecue and gift bags… and even great music: Ocelot and Acid Girls and Young Americans and Pink Enemy!

I have a few tix to give away so hit me up and let’s try to make it happen: contests@bigstereo.net.

Oh man and we posted this back in April, but if you’re still not familiar with Ocelot (and you should be)…

Midnight Juggernauts - “Into the Galaxy” (YouTube via Who The Hell)

How much are we anticipating the new Midnight Juggernauts’ album? Like lots and lots. Here’s the promo video for “Into the Galaxy” directed by Kromz who has done quite a few other Midnight Juggernauts videos. Nice little sneak at Dystopia.

LOUISAHHH!!!

Louisahhh!!!

Here’s a little mix tape action to get your July 4th started. Play this at the beach or the barbque or right before the fireworks are set to go off or whatever your Independence Day plans may be.

Louisahhh looks more like a Floukids cover girl than a dj… but. We all know our music is dominated by men, soooo I’m always a little bit more curious when a woman is on decks… Djing is such a boys club, but watch out. There are a lot of up and coming girls ready to take over. Regardless of gender, Louisahhh’s “The Universe” passes the test: she’s representing some fresh tracks.

Interpol’s Streaming Our Love To Admire, Playing MSG

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

The broody BK crew has announced a full fall tour, and you'll forgive us for shooting straight to the NYC date, to find they've booked Madison Square Garden. We've got the rest of the dates for you, too -- but MSG is notable 'cause it's larger than anything else on the tour, and 'cause it's, um, MSG. Of course, they're indie by a strict constructionist's view no more, and you can be sure Capitol will roll out the promotional muscle ... but are they Garden-sized? Maybe, if we're judging by the line of ticketless miracle-seekers at Bowery last month.

Well if the band's new one has eluded you so far, you can stream the whole deal over at MTV, read our crib notes on the record here, and/or watch 'em do a few of those tunes live at AOL. Be the most gloomy person at your BBQ!

But before you do, riddle us this: Is Interpol now the biggest of the 'NYC Four', as one of you called them (Interpol, Walkmen, YYYs, Strokes)? The best? (This should be fun.) Take the jump for Interpol dates.
