Psychedelic Furs, Prepare To Get KoRny

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Good news for people who like bad news. Recently, the National set their baritonic sights on a vintage Psychedelic Furs gem, and now KoRn are gonna bludgeon another. And that's in addition to a full-album slate of run-for-covers. Via Billboard:

"We've already done, like, 'Love My Way' from Psychedelic Furs," said Korn frontman Jonathan Davis. "We've done 'We Care a Lot' from Faith No More [and Nine Inch Nails'] 'Head Like a Hole.' Those are already recorded. We just gotta get in and do some more."

Davis said that he, guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer and bassist Reggie "Fieldy" Avizu "keep writing down covers" they'd like to record. Davis' current wish list includes Prince's "Erotic City," Ozzy Osbourne's "Diary of a Madman" and Debbie Deb's "Lookout Weekend" as done by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam.C'mon guys, before you freak on a leash ... how bad could it be?

Oh yeah. Nevermind.

“Thriller” in Manil-err…

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Just the one question, really. See if you can guess it.

Wtf?

Apparently these inmates of the Philippines' Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center have done this before, but we were inspired to post by their faithful take on the original (also, we're suckers for that arms-up "Thriller" dance). On the one hand, it's good to see inmates being rehabilitated in a way that will help them become productive members of society (if by "productive member of society" one means "able to lurch around like a zombie"). On the other hand, doesn't this violate the Geneva convention?

And, more importantly, do you think they take requests?

Iron & Wine Covers Radiohead

Friday, July 20th, 2007

No surprise that "No Surprises" is shaping up to be one of OK Computer's most covered tracks; in addition to being unbelievably gorgeous, its spare and relatively imitable Yorke melody make it a top rate candidate for homage. This past month we brought you two -- the ethereal tribute by Marissa Nadler and the reverent spin from Long Island trio Northern State -- and now you can add Sam's cover to the ever-increasing canon. And of course, Iron & Wine knows a thing or two about covers. From his his Saturday set at this past weekend's Pitchfork Music Festival.

State your fave, and take the jump for a pic from the fest fit to hang on your door. Now with more beard.

Band-Aid On Horseshit?

Friday, July 20th, 2007

At Hiro Ballroom last week, on the same night Zach Galifianakis accepted someone else's bid on an ostrich-man painting just 'cause they offered more money than us, Band Of Horses closed out the night with a set showcasing some new stuff next to Everything All The Time favorites. But when the crowd was noticeably excited for "Funeral," singer Ben Bridwell made note, saying something like "Do I have to play this song again?"

Commenter DirtyPistol noted that at a recent San Diego show, Ben lost his shit over the same song onstage. DirtyP offered:

Yeah Ben completely lost it after playing Funeral in San Diego last week. I agree with him that San Diego crowds are TERRIBLE and he yelled "All you fucking kids don't move a muscle all show until Funeral comes on then you go nuts and take pictures/videos for your MySpace or whatever. Sorry but its so fucking annoying!"
This being the golden age of Web 2.0, Ben's annoyance with fan-made videos was captured with ... a fan-made video. And a blog post by said amateur videographer, calling the reverb rockers "Band-aid On Horseshit." Cue P4K news, who contacted Ben to explain his side of the story through a friendly, photo-free Q&A.

Y&R - “Police Police”

Somebody hurry up quick and bring Young & Restless to America. I’m begging you. Please. Directed by Rhett Wade-Ferrell for Moop Jaw, the “Police Police” video totally cements my love for this band.

NY Post’s 100 Greatest Cover Songs Of All Time

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

New York Post put together their unranked top 100 all time covers, and of course it's a mixed bag. Throw together a list of 100 anythings and you're bound to hit on the necessities (Jimi's "All Along the Watchtower," Jeff's "Hallelujah," Ry's "Wonderwall," the Talking Heads' "Take Me To The River" ... even Luna's "Sweet Child O'Mine"!) -- but Alien Ant Farm? Orgy? There's a reason you don't hear those anymore, NYP. Here's 10...

01 "Stairway to Heaven" - Dolly Parton (Led Zeppelin)
02 "Baby Got Back" - Jonathan Coulton (Sir Mix-A-Lot)
03 "Hazy Shade of Winter" - The Bangles (Simon and Garfunkel)
04 "Nothing Compares 2 U" - Sinead O'Connor (Prince)
05 "Showroom Dummies" - Señor Coconut & His Orchestra (Kraftwerk)
06 "Smooth Criminal" - Alien Ant Farm (Michael Jackson)
07 "Personal Jesus" - Johnny Cash (Depeche Mode)
08 "Against All Odds" - The Postal Service (Phil Collins)
09 "Easy (Like Sunday Morning)" - Faith No More (The Commodores)
10 "Tainted Love" - Soft Cell (Gloria Jones)
90 more after the jump.

Dragonette + Kissy Sell Out

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Dragonette

Dragonette might as well be crowned now as favorite pop band of Summer ‘07… they’re pretty much taking it over and getting remixed by everyone who matters along the way. Dragonette is here with a remix by Kissy Sell Out of their appetizing “Take It Like a Man.” Kissy Sell Out turns this track out into a psychedelic slow jamm… take it.

Dragonette - “Take It Like A Man” (Kissy Sellout remix) (mp3)

We posted the video a couple weeks ago… check that out if you haven’t already.

Remixes of this track have been popping up all over the Interwebs… use your mad Google skills to collect them all.

New Maxïmo Park Video - “Girls Who Play Guitars”

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

From Devo nods to sincere stares, Maxïmo Park's clearly put forethought and finances into their Earthly Pleasures clips, which we appreciate. It's always around video #3 that the laziness sets in/the coffers run dry, though, and unless you're JT, that's when things go to shit. (For JT, it hit the skids with #4.) And aside from a swirly trick or two, it is pretty standard we're playing/you're cheering fare ... but we love this song's hook (and bridge), so here ya go.

Let’s Get Literal: Revenge Of The Book Eaters 2007

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

The lineup's just been announced for this year's party for literacy, going down at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. It's the Revenge Of The Book Eaters, in which:

A.C. Newman sings alone
Grizzly Bear is a band
Feist reads from a book
Jim James croons
Sarah Vowell speaks
Demetri Martin hosts
The show is one-night-only this year, at NYC's Beacon Theater -- on 8/26 to benefit 826NYC (cute!), the nonprofit Brooklyn writing helping kids to get expositive. Last year Sufjan and Byrne had a duet on "Saginaw, Michigan." Who knows what the indie all-stars have cooked up this year, but you can bet it'll be awesome. Literally! (Ha!) Tickets range from $35-$50 and go on sale tomorrow at 10AM. Get 'em here.

OKX: One Last B-Side

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

By now you should have all the tracks of our cover-to-cover tribute to OK Computer -- both regular and bonus -- and last time we promised one more MP3 for ya: a proper b-side, from the excellent Airbag/How Am I Driving? EP. Now don't worry, this is our very last OKX post ... but we made sure to end on a good note.
