Melinda Jackson + Moustache

Melinda Jackson

Disco Dust brought us the fantastic Moustache remix of Melinda Jackson’s “Magic” (which is a cover of the Police song “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”). If you jump to conclusions then one half of Moustache is one half of Van She Tech which should have every blog house nerd creaming his pants right about now. Though, rumors are rumors… but it should be pretty easy to figure out the truth if you do a little digging on iSpy Record’s MySpace. I say easy but then again half the internet is still debating whether or not Van She Tech is boys or girls.

Melinda Jackson - “Magic” (Moustache remix) (mp3)

This isn’t Moustache’s first work with Melinda Jackson. She was the vocalist on Moustache’s first single “Everywhere” from a couple years ago… which is more pop than dance and also equally fantastic.

ThunderHeist

ThunderHeist is taking over the West Coast for the next week. If you miss them you’ll regret it because they’re definitely one of the most exciting duos to come out of Canada since… well everybody comes from Canada these days so… yeah. Anyway, they have the “Bubblegum” 12 inch coming out soon on Bigfoot and an album in the works. Get a little taste below with “Jerk It” — you’re gonna have this one on repeat. And if you like “Jerk It” then there is much more to stream and love on their Myspace.

Thunderheist - “Jerk It”

Annnd… ThunderHeist is playing next week’s Check Yo Ponytail along with Plastic Little and JDH & Dave P. We have a couple tickets to give away so hit us up at contests@bigstereo.net. The people with the best sob story win. Play fair and don’t lie because I’m watching you.

Sorcerer - Divers Do It Deeper

Because I've been on a slo-mo-disco kick lately, I've got yet another trick up my sleeve (and it is one Ben, one of our contest winners already noted). That trick is Sorcerer, whose new album, White Magic is out now on Tirk Records (the answer to the Modular contest question).

Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good banger track - as evidenced by last weekend's Simian Mobile Disco show with our buddies at Fixed - but at the same time, when its hot as tits outside I need something cool to listen to, and Sorcerer is definitely cool. Sorcerer is the production name of San Franciscan, Daniel Saxon Judd, who is a founding member of the pop group Call And Response.

As Sorcerer, he started releasing his brand of electro disco psychedelia earlier this year on Tirk, with the single for "Surfing At Midnight" which garnered tons of praise from the beardo-community, not only because it is a sweet slice of music, but because it had an excellent Prins Thomas remix on the B-side. The rest of the album is absolutely solid, and I will recommend it without hesitation. Slow-motion beats, echo-boxed-out guitars, spooky synths, all married to the Californian sunset. Super sweet. RIYL: Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Metro Area, yacht rock (a little bit), Maurice Fulton, Quiet Village.

White Magic is available now from Tirk Records - check their online shop and see if they've added it yet, or see our friends at Forced Exposure, or download via iTunes. Also, be sure to hit up the Myspace pages for Sorcerer and for Tirk Records to hear more stuff from them.

NOW: This is your final reminder to get on the Disco Boat - you can still get the cheaper pre-sale tickets HERE (they're $15 now, or $25 on-board). We'll be dropping the plank and letting people on the cruize-liner around 11pm, and the boat leaves promptly at midnight, so don't be late. 18 and over. Finally, if you want to come and party with us, but you can't pay your way, I have ONE guest-list spot still available that I want to give to you, gentle readers. Email me - blair (at) music.for-robots.com - no later than 7pm today with "Disco Cruise" in the subject-line, and I'll pick an entry at random. PS: I've got a grip of free light-up lipgloss to give away to people on the boat! Whee!!!

gb

yay more new stuff from Golden Bug. They are releasing a new 12″ in September on Gomma Records and here’s some of the golden goodness. ‘Horses’ has the infectious beat that won’t leave my hips alone and ‘We Love Tokyo’ reminds me of that scene in Blade where the Japanese schoolgirls are up on the bar entertaining all those sleazy businessmen….anyone else remember that? eh…..

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

So I got married on June 30th, and then went on a weeklong honeymoon in St. Lucia (thank you, scheduled blog posts!). Everything went perfectly, from the weather in Cape Cod for our outdoor ceremony (75 and sunny) to the weather in St. Lucia (87 and sunny). Everything was amazing, and beautiful, and I'm so glad I'm married who I'm married to. Being back in Minneapolis, and in the world of newspapers, blogging, and e-mail, is definitely a mixed blessing.

The only thing even remotely bad about the honeymoon was the fact that I forgot my iPod charger, which meant I hardly heard any music all week. For me, this is a ridiculous notion, and I had to choose wisely, lest my iPod die halfway through the week. I found myself listening to a few songs everyday - specifically, the Dr. Luke remix of Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" featuring Lil Mama (don't knock it til you try it!), and these two songs from the new Jarvis Cocker solo album, "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time" and "Heavy Weather."

We hardly ever get to write about more mainstream music here, because stuff on major labels are off-limits for us good robots. So it's funny that the major label stuff we really like - in addition to Jarvis, I've been especially hooked on the new Feist like everybody else - doesn't ever get mentioned. I can't stop listening to Jarvis. It's far from perfect; there are three or four songs that just don't do anything for me. But these two songs are just incredible. (Of course, the fact that I chose these songs as honeymoon-in-the-Caribbean listening will only encourage those who think I only listen to depressing music. Drat!)

You should buy Jarvis.

**** Upatde, 7/17: I just found that "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time" is available to download here. But you should still buy the whole dang album, okay?

New Young Pony Club - Ice Cream (Herve Goes Bananas Remix)

As many of you readers know, Music For Robots has been around for a while now (three years last April), and throughout that time we've been big fans and supporters of the Modular label. What can I say? We're buddies. They have been consistent and relevant by continuing to release music by good bands - great bands - like the Avalanches, Wolfmother and the Presets, and they show no signs of stopping.

Their latest group, the UK's New Young Pony Club, is about to release their first full-length album, Fantastic Playroom - the album comes out in CD form on August 28th, but it is available today on iTunes (get it here). To get you excited about the album, I've got a remix for you. This remix of their first big hit, "Ice Cream", is by Herve, part of the wonky-fidget-house crew on the Dubsided and Counterfeet labels. It is, as sayeth the title, totally bananas. I won't call it a Music For Robots "exclusive", because people seem to be bothered by that term, but I'm pretty psyched that Modular gave it to us to give away.

Speaking of giveaways, I've got some Modular goods to give you: the new Cut Copy twelve-inch for "Hearts On Fire" with the crazy Joakim remix, New Young Pony Club's The Bomb 7" picture disc(!!), and the new Bang Gang Deejays double-disc mix CD that comes out on July 31st (and is only going to be available as an import). I have two copies of each of these, so TWO lucky readers will get the goods.

So let's keep it simple so we'll have a lot of entries: tell me the label that put out the first New Young Pony Club seven-inch, which was limited to 500 copies (bonus points if you know the 2005 Gomma mix that the song appears on). Send your answers to blair (at) music.for-robots.com with "Modular Contest" in the subject line. I'll pick the TWO winners at random. The contest is over! Winners are Ben and Kai!

AND finally, I've got some info on three upcoming 'Modular Monthly' parties in different cities: Chicago, LA, and NYC (at which I'll be DJ-ing), so hit the jump for full party info... I can promise you that all of them will be bonkers. Hooray!

The National - Slow Show (Daytrotter Session)

I'm never sure what to do when the lyrics of a song so accurately depict shit from my own life. I know that I'm not the only asshole out there getting punched in the face whenever he sings "You know I dreamed about you for 29 years before I saw you" or how he's going to run home and put on a slow dumb show for his girl and make her laugh. It's what we all do, and he's put it so succintly. This is where the National shine, at least in my book. Their lyrics and music are tailor made for my generation -- the late 20s early 30s folks who are still trying to get their shit together in life and love and might have one figured out but not the other. And then these assholes have to come along and paint such a glorious picture of hope that you can't help but resent them a little bit for putting ideas in your head.

Still, the song is pure National and one of the best in their catalogue. I know there are some haters out there who would rather listen to Spoon or whatever. And that's fine. I think the National are 100% genuine in what they do, and that's why I like them so much. At the end of the day they're just nice guys trying to figure it all out, one song at a time. What's not to like?

Normally I wouldn't post a daytrotter song. I think that Sean over there is doing an absolutely amazing job and I don't want to steal any of his thunder. His writing and selection is outstanding, so most of the time there's no need to post one of this songs. But when he gets one of my favorite bands to record on of my favorite songs I can't pass up the opportunity to talk about it. I'm a nerd like that. Life is hard.

You should go check out the rest of the set. Especially their cover of Psychedelic Furs' "pretty in pink." They do it justice for sure.
