Sally Shapiro - He Keeps Me Alive
Many of you will probably be familiar with Sally Shapiro and her first full-length album Disco Romance, as it came out late last year on Austria's Diskokaine label. The album was a pretty big underground hit and showed up on many critics and DJs lists, and seemed to further illustrate the excellent abilities of Sweden's musicians to produce fantastic pop music. Disco Romance is written by Shapiro and her excellent producer Johan Agebjörn, who, according to the press materials, started off as office acquaintances that made mixtapes for each other and discovered they shared mutual tastes in pop, disco (and specifically Italo disco), via Madonna, Limahl, Visage, Savage and Fun Fun.
Disco Romance is thus filled to the brim with said influences: glittery, fast electro and disco beats reminiscent of the sounds of 1982, matched perfectly with Sally's great vocals. Throughout the last year, those of us on this side of the Atlantic have had to pay dearly to get a hold of this slice of pop perfection, but finally, Canada's Paper Bag Records (who put out a few bands we've featured here on MFR, including Magneta Lane) is releasing the album in late October. Even better, the album includes three new songs that didn't appear on the European release and a couple of different mixes of tracks, including the first single "I'll Be By Your Side".
Keep an eye out for Disco Romance in a few weeks - you'll be able to get it from most reputable music stores, or direct from the label's online shop. Hit up her myspace page for more info and tracks. Highly recommended.
