Harrisons - Dear Constable (Demo)

Oh. My. God. You ever think you're not hungry, only to have someone stick something under your nose that stirs some ravenous need deep down inside? That's exactly what happened to me when I put in the Harrisons debut CD, No Fighting in the War Room. I needed this so goddamn bad, and I had no idea.

I'm too young to remember when either rock or british rock were singular genres, but you know how there kinda is that quintessential UK sound (I'm speaking as an American youth here) that you hear in what are now golden oldies (The Clash, The Jam, Happy Mondays, you know - required listening when you were in your teens)? It's a style that, despite the fact that I'm sure it's being produced in droves still over there, doesn't make it over here much. But fucking hell - this Harrisons album was like a concentrated triple shot of everything good about music on the island that I'm underexposed to by virtue of living here. Awesome, thick northern UK accents; songs that range from pop bliss to on the verge of punk; solid performances by all four members of the group... this is my hands-down favorite thing out of the UK that's not M.I.A. in a long time. Listening to it has been so nurturing, bringing me back to a whole style of rock I'd shrugged and unintentionally given up on after years of being understimulated. The group hails from Sheffield, and you maybe, maybe were lucky enough to see them at SXSW.

Updated: You can download No Fighting in the War Room for free via eMusic (thanks Daniel!), or if you prefer physical music to digital you can be a good lad and order the single on Melodic's website. Either way, you can listen to additional songs and watch videos from the band on either their website (yay!) or their myspace page (boo!). As an included bonus, hit the jump for the video for this song (which uses the cleaner, personally preferred album version of the song) plus an additional video/track (Blue Note) in the full post!
